Amount 30 grams Ingredients Japanese green tea Find two matcha recipes below Very delicate and refined, this top quality matcha has a velvety, mellow texture and a sweet, smooth fragrance. It is processed specially for making Koicha(the thick tea drunk during the tea ceremony). The liquor has a very pleasant and intense aroma.

How to make matcha

To start there are two ways to prepare matcha:
  • Koicha: thick matcha. Has a consistency similar to runny honey. Smoother and sweeter than Usucha.
  • Usucha: thin matcha. Is made of any kind of matcha, though higher qualities are preferred to obtain a proper cup.

How to prepare Usucha tea?

  1. Warm the bowl: Pour hot water into the bowl to roughly a third of its volume, then dip just the prongs of the whisk in the water (chasen). When the bowl is warm enough, tip out the water and dry the bowl with a clean towel.
  2. Place 2 spoons of matcha (around 2 gr.) in the bowl, using the bamboo spoon. It is best to sieve the powder first to eliminate lumps.
  3. Pour around 80 ml hot water (65-75°C / 150-170°F) into the bowl.
  4. Hold the bowl in one hand and, with the other, beat the mixture sharply with a whisk, in a W shape, until it forms a smooth foam. The Matcha is now ready to drink.

How to prepare Koicha tea?

  1. Warm the bowl: Pour hot water into the bowl to roughly a third of its volume, then dip just the prongs of the whisk (chasen) in the water. When the bowl is warm enough, tip out the water and dry the bowl with a clean towel.
  2. Place 4 spoons of matcha (around 4 gr.) in the bowl, using the bamboo spoon. You are strongly advised to sieve the matcha powder finely before placing it in the bowl.
  3. Pour around 40 ml hot water (65-75°C / 140-150°F) in the bowl, just enough to cover the Matcha powder.
  4. Unlike Usucha, Koicha must NOT have a foamy consistency. You must therefore not beat it too vigorously or rapidly. Mix slowly, stirring with the whisk in a clockwise direction. You should obtain a tea with a thick and smooth consistency.

Natural flavors come from natural sources, such as essential oils, essences, or extracts. Artificial flavors are made in a factory, without the use of any plant or fruit. They may seem to taste the same, but they lack depth and nuance. We want to be able to drink our tea with confidence and show and taste the beauty of nature, which is why you'll only find teas with natural ingredients here.

While we offer great unflavored teas, we sometimes create a blend that does contain flavorings. In fact, that’s why some of our favorite blends taste so good! Keep in mind that no matter how strong the flavor, the actual amount of flavorings in a brewed cup of tea is virtually zero — about 0.001%.

But if flavorings aren't your thing, you still have a ton of options. We have over 40 unflavored blends like this one ... and counting!

You've come to the right place! Depending on the tea type and ingredients, we recommend different steeping times and temperatures to ensure the flavors are just right. You can find our recommended steeping instructions on each tea's product page.

Most of our teas contain virtually no sugar, carbohydrates or calories. When they do, they are natural sugars (for example in pineapple teas) and always less than 5% of the amount of sugar found in most fruit juices or other ready-to-drink beverages on the market, making them a healthier alternative.

For more detailed information, see the 'Ingredients' of each tea.

While most of our teas are gluten-free, they are not produced in dedicated gluten-free facilities and are not certified gluten-free. Please check the ingredients and allergen lists carefully and, if in doubt, consult your healthcare provider.

And yes, we have a huge selection of vegan teas! Shop our vegan teas here .

The product page of each tea contains a list of ingredients and mentions the main allergens. Please read everything carefully. If you have an allergy, we recommend that you talk to your healthcare provider before consuming any of our teas.

The right teapot

At CiTea we believe that drinking the perfect cup of tea goes beyond just using fresh ingredients in our tea. To prepare the perfect cup of tea, a good teapot is essential. Ultimately, it makes the difference between a 'good' cup of tea and a 'perfect' cup of tea. When choosing a teapot, it is important that you pay attention to a number of things. It is useful to see what materials the teapot is made of and whether the tea stays warm. Teapots are made from different materials. At CiTea we only use high-quality materials. At CiTea we have cast iron, glass and porcelain teapots. Of course, you not only want a functional teapot, but also a teapot that looks nice. The teapots can be found in different colors, including black, green, pink, red and white. The cast iron teapots are made in Japanese style, with each motif having its own meaning. The porcelain teapots are sturdy and suitable for every household. At CiTea they are simple, elegant and available in white.

Maybe a glass teapot is something for you. A glass teapot does not release any color or taste. This teapot is easy to keep clean. Unfortunately, a glass teapot loses its heat faster. At CiTea there are beautiful glass teapots of good quality. You can even buy a glass teapot with a filter.

Tea bags and tea filters

If you like to drink loose tea, it is useful to use tea filters. At CiTea we sell high-quality paper tea filters with which you can make your own tea bags with loose tea. The tea filters are made of natural material and the box is made of recycled cardboard. You can also choose one of our stainless steel tea filters. Most stainless steel filters in our range can be easily cleaned by putting them in the dishwasher.

Tea tins

If you store tea properly, the tea will last longer. In a tea tin you store tea correctly to maintain the best taste sensation. At CiTea we sell various tea tins that ensure that your tea stays fresh longer. The tea tins are airtight and cool. This makes CiTea tea tins ideal for storing your tea for longer and maintaining its quality.
